The Story #55

My fiancé and I originally wanted to elope, but our families convinced us to have a wedding so they could celebrate with us. We compromised and planned a tiny, 15-person wedding — immediate family, grandparents and a few friends who have been part of our 10-year relationship. To keep it intimate, we decidedno aunts, uncles or plus-ones. On either side.

Now, two months before the wedding, his family is furious that his aunts and uncles weren’t invited. His parents and brother have told him we’re doing the “wrong thing,” compared him to an estranged relative and have even threatened to stop speaking to us. They’ve also questioned whymy own half-sister gets an invitation while his extended family doesn’t.

Here’s the thing: I’ve never even met these relatives. They live across the country, haven’t visited or reached out during our entire relationship, and inviting them would mean opening the guest list to extended family on my side too. Suddenly, our 15-person wedding becomes closer to 50 people. And we’re paying for it. My fiancé and I are covering 90%, with my parents gifting us the remaining 10%. His family isn’t offering to cover the additional guests they’re demanding.

Invitations are already out. The venue and catering are booked. I’ve already spent around $5K. At this point, I feel like our options are to give in, have his family skip the wedding, deal with them being miserable the entire day… or cancel everything and elope like we wanted to in the first place.

I’m genuinely getting to the point where I want to choose the last option.Am I wrong for refusing to invite his extended family? Or have my future in-laws completely crossed the line?
